S.Pellegrino Terme Parish Church

Piazza San Francesco D'Assisi, 20
San Pellegrino Terme

Description

The parish church is dedicated to St Peregrine, an evangelist in France, Bishop of Auxerre, where he was martyred under Diocletian. In 1715 the rebuilding of the 15th century church was started. The belltower dates from 1753, the bells from 1845. The baroque interior has a vast barrel vault with 4 large arches containing the side altars. Some of the paintings in the vault and the gold-work are from the late 1800s. The marble floor is part of the last restoration, as is the baptismal font by the architect L. Angelini. In the choirstalls there is the painting of the martyrdom of St Peregrine by del Longhi (1702-1785), of which Maironi da Ponte says: “attributed by some to the Tiziano school, it is masterfully and vividly executed”. The Serassi organ is from 1734. An interesting altar is to Our Lady of Carmel with “The Virgin and Child with St. Rocco, St Sebastian and St Peregrine” by Ceresa of San Giovanni, while the Virgin Birth by Cifrondi (1667-1730) is also outstanding.
