San Pietro D'Orzio Church

Description

Ancient documents testify the existence of a Church in the community of St. Peter's since very remote times (the oldest document dates back to 1237).
That Church, at first a subsidiary of the Pieve di Dossena, was a fairly large building, with the roof supported by two arches. Outside the church had a portico to the west; to the north stood the parish house and the bell tower. The Town Hall, the Schools and the Cemetery were located in the same place.
The instability of the ground had made it necessary to consolidate the foundations and the perimeter walls. Despite several safety works, a part of the structure was dangerous and threatened to fall.

Everyone advised the immediate demolition of the Church and suggested the construction of a new building in a more convenient location for the people and on more solid ground and so it happened.

On 11th May 1899 the Bishop of Bergamo, Monsignor Gaetano Camillo Guindani, blessed the first stone of the parish church with a solemn ceremony.
After some years of intense work, in 1901 they were interrupted until 1904 when the voluntary work of the parishioners resumed. In 1905 the interior of the church was completed with the construction of the vaults, the laying of the floor and the sacristy. In December everything was ready: the imposing apparatus of the Triduo was raised and on December 24, 1905 the Church was opened for worship, with the blessing of the parish priest Don Peiti.

The first intervention, which took about two years of work, concerned the arrangement of the side altars, the painting, gilding and stuccoing of the interior.
