Description

Laxolo's Church, dedicated to St Gothhard the Bishop, is in the centre of the village at 530 m.s.l. and is generally thought to be the earliest church in the Brembilla area. As an independent parish it was founded by decree on the 23rd of November 1919 by Bishop Luigi Maria Merelli. The new church now on the site was built by the Gervasoni firm in 1936-38 next to the old one. It was consecrated on the 5th of February 1938 by Bishop Adriano Bernareggi.  Eclectic in style with Byzantine touches in its three apses, its external cylindrical lantern tower and interior semi circular dome. The monumental atrium is characteristic of the building. The church's many paintings come from the older church and are mostly by anonymous seventeenth and eighteenth century Genoese painters as is the central Madonna con i Santi Sebastiano e Gottardo painting and the S. Gottardo in Cattedra.
