Discovering the world of Zanni, Harlequin and the commedia dell'arte is a journey that will take you to the heart of Italian cultural tradition. In the village of Oneta, in the municipality of San Giovanni Bianco, is the Harlequin House Museum, an enchanting place that preserves the history of these iconic characters. The museum can be visited and also offers workshops and activities for the public. Here, among masks and puppets, relive the Renaissance atmosphere thanks also to the presence of the stable puppet theater of the Compagnia del Riccio, active during events and guided tours. And if you want to extend your discovery, the museum is also a great starting point for exploring the historic Via Mercatorum, an ancient route that connected the plains to the Alpine valleys.
Who is Harlequin?
Harlequin is one of the most recognizable masks of the Commedia dell'Arte, but his origin is less light than later imagery has led one to believe. He was born in the 16th century as an evolution of the figure of Zanni, the servant from Bergamo who emigrated to Venice in search of work: hungry, cunning, often humiliated, yet capable of turning situations around with practical intelligence. Over time, Harlequin loses the original roughness of the Zanni and takes on a more complex personality: agile, cunning, ambiguous, faithful and opportunistic at the same time. His patched costume - now neat and geometric - derives from a patched-up pauper's suit, a symbol of precarious social conditions. The black mask recalls archaic and popular traits, also linked to demonic figures from Alpine folklore, later domesticated by theater. Harlequin thus becomes the servant par excellence: not a hero, but a survivor, moving between masters and power with irony and instinct.
Walking through the village of Oneta, you will come across an architectural setting that tells a rich and fascinating story. The carefully restored medieval houses will make you relive the era when the noble Grataroli family dominated the local scene. Don't miss the Church of the Carmine, custodian of wonderful works, and the great fresco of St. Christopher, who protected travelers along their way.
If you want to fully immerse yourself in nature and history, the itinerary that leads on foot from Oneta to Cornello dei Tasso along the Via Mercatorum offers a unique opportunity. As you walk along this path, overlooking the Valle dei Mulini, you can savor breathtaking landscapes and the ancient silence that envelops the tradition of the Brembana Valley. This is an itinerary that can be walked all year round and is of touristic difficulty. However, it is recommended that you tackle it with hiking boots and comfortable clothing.
A journey full of excitement, stories and beauty awaits you to be discovered. Don't miss this opportunity: the world of Zanni and Harlequin is waiting for you!
