Description

Mount Alben (2019 m) between the Brembana and Seriana Valleys is almost circular with valleys and passes separating it from the surrounding hills. Its geographic isolation and limited glaciation during the Quaternary had two important effects on its vegetation and animal population. Firstly, ancient plant and animal-life was conserved, secondly, isolation allowed the evolution of animal and vegetable species endemic to this range. Monte Alben is also very interesting geologically as it is the only place in the Bergamasque Pre-Alps that you can see all phases of formation and evolution of noric carbon strata from prehistoric coral reefs that formed the current rock-face of Alben in a subtropical sea 200 million years ago.
