Training and fun with bouldering

An accessible and engaging activity suitable for families, young people and experienced climbers. In Val Brembana, bouldering is practiced outdoors, among the boulders of Fondra, and indoors, in an indoor space designed for year-round training.

Bouldering is a discipline of climbing that is practiced on natural boulders or man-made structures of low height, without ropes or harnesses. Safety is ensured by crash-pads, soft mats placed at the base of the boulders, and by mutual attention between climbers.

It is a physical and creative activity: each “boulder” is a small problem to solve, made up of balance, strength, coordination and intuition. This is precisely why bouldering is one of the most popular and cross-cutting forms of climbing today.

A discipline for everyone: from kids to families

Originally created as training for wall climbing, bouldering has established itself over time as an independent discipline. Its origins date back to the early 1900s, particularly in France's Fontainebleau forest, where boulders became a playground for play and experimentation.

Today, bouldering is also popular with young people and families. The reasons are simple: it does not require complex equipment, it is practiced at low heights, and it allows climbing together, alternating attempts and breaks.
For kids it is a challenging and dynamic activity; for families it can become a shared outdoor experience where everyone tackles the blocks according to their abilities, developing confidence, coordination and concentration.

In the Brembana Valley, bouldering offers contexts suitable both for those seeking a playful first approach to climbing and for those who want a regular sport activity.

Bouldering for experienced climbers

For experienced climbers, bouldering is a focused and highly technical training tool. The boulders allow you to work on maximal strength, explosive movements, coordination and foot precision, concentrating complex sequences and intense gestures in just a few meters.

Fondra Boulder Zone

The village of Fondra is home to the Fondra Boulder Zone, a large natural area nestled in the woods, particularly suitable for bouldering. Climbing takes place on boulders of different shapes and difficulties in a quiet and accessible environment.

Thanks to the ELIGO project, promoted by the Mountain Community of the Brembana Valley, in 2016 the area accesses funding from the Lombardy Region that allows the necessary interventions to be carried out for its enhancement, formalizing the birth of the Fondra Boulder Zone.

In the summer of 2023, new work began on mapping and cataloging the boulders. The current goal is to revitalize and keep the area alive through climbing, fostering care and cleaning of the area.

At the Fondra Boulder Zone, in particular, the variety of boulders and lines makes it possible to maintain a continuous workout even for those who habitually practice crags or long routes, offering a peaceful natural setting suitable for technical work sessions, repetitions and experimentation with new movements.

The Bouldering Hall for year-round indoor climbing

Alongside outdoor practice, the Brembana Valley is enriched with an indoor space dedicated to bouldering.
In the Botanical Garden area, The Bouldering Room, a covered space designed for climbing on low structures, without ropes, with protective mattresses on the ground, is being created.

The hall will have about 65 square meters of climbing panels, mounted on an arched laminated wood beam structure, and another 45 square meters of vertical wall, for a total of more than 600 climbing holds. A space suitable for kids, families and sportsmen, ideal for approaching the discipline or for training continuously throughout the year.
