Mount Podona features two distinct peaks that frame Bergamo from the foothills of the Pre-Alps, offering ideal terrain for walkers and mountain runners. Its ridges provide sweeping views of the Selvino plateau, the Lecco mountains and the Orobian Alps.
The most convenient access starts from Nembro, which can be reached from the Val Brembana state road: following the signs for Selvino for about three kilometers, you will find the junction for Lonno, where you will park in the village square.
The ascent begins along the paved road that passes in front of the church, then veers right on the steps of Via Podona and continues on trail 535. After a series of hairpin bends in the forest, you reach the dropout at an elevation of 863 m, from which you ascend left to the roccolo and the first peak of Podona (1192 m), dominated by a large cross. Continuing along a slightly downhill section you reach Cima Podona (1227 m), with a small cross and a view of the village of Salmezza.
The descent is by the same route, or via Salmezza and following the mule track to Monte di Nese, with the possibility of returning to Lonno via a trail on the western side of the mountain. Although little known, Podona offers excellent training ground, extendable to Corna Bianca, Costone and Monte Filaressa for those who want a longer hike.
The mountain is also accessible in winter, but only to experienced hikers with appropriate equipment; during the winter season it is also advisable to contact the huts in advance to check if they are open.
