The Via del Ferro is one of the most fascinating thematic itineraries in Val Brembana: a historical-naturalistic route that retraces the ancient ore routes, connecting the former mines and smelting furnaces of Val Torta with Mezzoldo. Implemented by the Comunità Montana in 2004, it runs for about 25 km among paths, mule tracks and secondary roads, connecting the locality Falghera di Valtorta (1,145 m) to the hamlet San Giovanni di Mezzoldo (798 m), with a total elevation gain of 870 meters.
The itinerary tells a millennia-old story: that of iron mining, an activity central to the economy of the upper valley and capable of influencing not only production techniques but also local culture. The presence of workers from central Europe left linguistic, architectural and social traces that are still recognizable today.
The Val Torta, for centuries linked to the Milanese territories and Valsassina, was the scene of political competitions between great families such as the Torriani, while entire communities were involved in the activities of the induced industries: miners, lumberjacks, charcoal burners, blacksmiths and mule drivers who animated the iron routes with their daily work.
Recognized as one of the four great historical-hiking routes in the Brembana Valley, the Via del Ferro now offers an exciting journey through mining archaeology, lush nature and small villages rich in tradition.
To enhance a walking experience that is safe and as separate as possible from vehicular traffic, a high variant is also proposed, an alternative route that connects Santa Brigida - Cusio - Colle della Maddalena - Ornica - Colle Dudello - Cantello - Valtorta, passing through unspoiled landscapes and ancient mountain link roads.
A trail that combines culture, nature and memory, ideal for curious hikers and history buffs.
