This fascinating hike accompanies the walker from the 408 meters of Brembilla to the nearly 1,000 meters of Catremerio, along a route that preserves the history, nature and traditions of ancient mountain communities. The route, which can be covered in about two hours, follows a splendid historic mule track, which in many sections is a true masterpiece of rural art.
The path crosses several ancient contrade, small clusters that preserve intact the charm of the past. We encounter Cerro, Foppa and Cadonzelli, districts rich in typical elements of mountain architecture: wooden balconies, stone portals, the old school now converted into a community center and the pretty little church from 1860, a landmark for the inhabitants of the time.
Continuing for about ten minutes, you reach the picturesque Contrada Fienili, a rural nucleus now uninhabited but unique for its stone and wooden structures that testify to the ancient work of farmers and the ingenuity of mountain construction.
The trail then continues with gentler, flatter sections, crossing pastures dotted with oaks, birches and junipers. In summer the area comes alive with color thanks to the presence of gentian, heather and beautiful wild orchids, providing a lively and fragrant landscape. Just before arriving, a small stream anticipates the entrance to the contrada Catremerio di Qua, also known as the contrada dei “Balòss,” a place where time seems to stand still.
Proceeding further, one comes to the church of San Gaetano, immersed in the silence of the meadows, and a little further on one reaches Catremerio di Là, known as the “Aocàcc” district. Its houses, arcades and centuries-old structures offer an authentic picture of peasant life in the past.
