Sciesopoli in Selvino

The history of Sciesopoli began on June 11, 1933, when the Milanese fascist group named after patriot Amatore Sciesa founded a farmhouse in Selvino. Inaugurated in the same year and designed by Paolo Vietti-Violi with Andràs Benko, the facility was created as a sports colony for Balilla and little Italian girls, described by propaganda as ’the most beautiful in Europe.“ After the war, on September 21, 1945, the colony was entrusted to the Milan Jewish community and the Jewish Brigade, becoming a refuge for some 800 children who survived the Shoah. Under the leadership of Moshe Zeiri and thanks to an innovative pedagogical method, Sciesopoli was transformed into a welcoming place where young people found language, identity and hope. In 1983, many of those children, now adults, returned to Selvino and placed a commemorative plaque on the building. Declared of historical interest in 2015, Sciesopoli becomes in 2019 the site of MuMeSE, a memorial museum dedicated to its extraordinary story of rebirth.
