Monte Masoni, or Monte Sasso, is the highest peak on the ridge that rises from the Venina Pass in the upper Val Brembana, on the border with Valtellina. Its commanding position offers a sweeping 360-degree panorama of the surrounding mountains. Along the ascent path one still encounters the remains of ancient iron mines, evidence of mining activity in the past.
From Carona, take the mule track marked 210, cross the hamlet of Pagliari and reach the Val Sambuzza waterfall, then continue to Lago del Prato, where the forest road to Rifugio Longo starts.
Just before the hut, turn left following the signs for Passo di Venina: the trail climbs steeply to the meadows of Baita Masoni and then over rockier terrain leads to the ridge at an elevation of 2509 m, with a splendid view of Val Venina. From here you leave the main trail and follow a ridge marked by cairns, passing below the Cima di Venina and passing an intermediate elevation before reaching the summit of Masoni, marked by a small cross.
For the return trip, a loop can be made by descending to Devil's Lake and then to the Longo Refuge, finally reconnecting with the outward route.
The mountain is also accessible in winter, but only to experienced hikers with appropriate equipment; during the winter season it is also advisable to contact the huts in advance to check if they are open.
