The Twin Lakes, now a single reservoir created by the Enel dam, were once two small identical bodies of water. Legend tells of a young woman from Branzi, the daughter of a wealthy merchant, who fell in love with a modest shepherd from Val Taleggio. The girl's father, annoyed that the young man was not wealthy, had already promised his daughter to a wealthy landowner in Val Fondra: an aging and unpleasant man, whom the young woman, however, did not want to marry.
To avoid the arranged marriage, the girl pretended to be seriously ill, and through a clever deception, the pastor managed to show up at their home disguised as a doctor - so the two could meet secretly. Eventually they arranged a nighttime escape: but during the escape the girl fell, fainted, and the shepherd, in despair, took her in his arms and tried to run with her.
Unfortunately, he stumbled and fell with her into a ravine. There, by magic and commotion, two springs of water began to gush out, forming the two small lakes: the “twins,” who would be born from their tragic love. The sad but fascinating tale lends an aura of mystery and romance to the Twin Lakes, transforming them into a symbol of thwarted love, hope and sacrifice - a place that invites not only contemplation of nature, but also reflection on the stories the area holds.
Also present in the area is the eponymous Twin Lakes Refuge.
