House Museum

Harlequin House Museum

The Harlequin House Museum is located in the village of Oneta, inside Palazzo Grataroli, now owned by the municipality of San Giovanni Bianco. The name derives from the tradition that the Renaissance actor Alberto Naselli, famous interpreter of Zanni and Harlequin in European courts, stayed here, although documentary evidence is lacking. The museum preserves commedia dell'arte masks and has been home to a permanent puppet theater of the Compagnia del Riccio since 2015, which is active during guided tours and events. It is also home to educational workshops and a starting point for visits along the Via Mercatorum.

The building, which is medieval in origin and may have had a defensive function, became a stately home between the 15th and 17th centuries thanks to the Grataroli family, who brought Venetian architectural taste to it and decorated it with fine frescoes. In the Camera Picta one can admire 15th-century scenes celebrating the family's rise through patron saints and a knightly tournament. Finally, at the entrance, a fresco depicts Homo Sevadego with an admonition in dialect, a symbol of the deep connection with the land and the rhythms of nature.
