Borgo Taramelli

The Taramelli hamlet, the historic heart of Selvino, is a charming collection of old houses gathered around a courtyard that opens next to Piazza Europa. Once part of the vast district of Rialto, it was the mouth of the ancient and important Via Mercatorum, the medieval road that connected Albino to the Brembana Valley and then to the Alpine passes to Switzerland. Access to the village is through two characteristic entrances: a picturesque lane full of portals, small balconies and mullioned windows with two lights, and the small Marconi square, once enlivened by the “Vino Buono” tavern. Dominant over the village stands the large sixteenth-century building that later became Albergo Falcone, among the first in Selvino, created thanks to the Taramelli brothers of Albino during the nineteenth century, a period when Selvino was beginning to transform into a resort town. With the twentieth century, the stable that occupied the courtyard was demolished to create a garden with a dance floor intended for tourists. Today the hamlet preserves fifteenth-century arches reopened during nineteenth-century restorations and the striking “Canècc,” a canopied arch that leads to the most intimate heart of the neighborhood, where sixteenth-century coats of arms and Marian frescoes testify to the long history of this fairy-tale corner still alive in the village.
