Granelli Square Railway Station

The railway station in Piazza Granelli in San Pellegrino Terme, opened in 1906, represented one of the most elegant and symbolic points of the entire route of the Brembana Valley Railway. Located next to the Grand Hotel and in front of the prestigious Municipal Casino, it fitted perfectly into the Art Nouveau context that characterized the spa town in the first decades of the twentieth century.Designed exclusively for passenger service, the station stood out from the other buildings along the line thanks to its monumental and decorative character, with refined architectural solutions and environments designed to offer a high level of hospitality. The large waiting room and the wooden canopy that covered the platform were designed to provide comfort and protection for travelers, many of whom belonged to the nobility or the political and business bourgeoisie that regularly frequented the spa resort.
Elements such as the circular window and the raised attic, placed in the center of the facade, testify to the architect's attention to aesthetics and suggest special care in defining the overall image of the building. The station was not just a place of transit, but a real calling card of the town, designed to impress visitors as soon as they arrived in the valley.
Today the Piazza Granelli station used as a restaurant remains a significant example of Art Nouveau railway architecture and preserves the memory of a time when train travel was an integral part of the elegant and refined San Pellegrino Terme experience.
