Cross Callisto Sguazzi Peter

On the slope of Mount Alben, above Cornalba, is the Callisto Sguazzi Peter Cross, one of the places symbolic of the Resistance in the Brembana Valley. Here we are reminded of the November-December 1944 roundup, when Fascist units staged a violent operation against the “24 Maggio - Giustizia e Libertà” Brigade, active in the area.
Machine guns planted near the village and on the bell tower, along with mortars that hit the fugitives heading for Alben, made it impossible for the young partisans to escape, many of whom were killed in the now bare winter woods. Among them were the brothers Gino and Pietro Cornetti, just seventeen and twenty-two years old (to whom the cross on Cima Cornetti is dedicated) and Callisto Sguazzi called Peter, an elementary school teacher originally from Robecco d'Oglio (CR), who arrived in the Brembana Valley to join the Resistance.
The large cross dedicated to Peter and the other fallen stands along one of the most intense viewpoints of the massif: to reach it is to take a short but significant itinerary of memory. It is a deep and silent stage, where nature and history intertwine, and where the Brembana Valley remembers the sacrifice of those who chose to oppose dictatorship and defend freedom.
