Consortium for the Protection of Strachitunt Valtaleggio PDO

The history of the Strachítunt has its roots in the mists of time. For centuries, this cheese was an excellence of the Orobian Alps, winning palates even beyond national borders. After a period of decline, recent years have marked an extraordinary revival, thanks mainly to the work of the Consortium for the Protection of Strachítunt Valtaleggio DOP. Today Strachítunt is considered one of the great cheeses of Europe and is part of the nine Bergamo PDOs.

From the present to the future
Strachítunt is often referred to as “the cheese of his people”: a product still made by hand, where people's expertise and experience are key. Its rebirth is the result of the passion of mountain herders, cheesemakers, refiners, tasters, traders, chefs, administrators and dreamers who believed in the possibility of bringing back an authentic mountain dairy tradition. From a valuable resource for farming families, today Strachítunt has become a job opportunity for several companies, also encouraging many young people to start new businesses in the Taleggio and Brembilla valleys. When the Consortium was born 20 years ago, the main goal was to protect the product, its identity and the territory. Today the dream is more ambitious: to make Strachítunt a real added value for the entire valley.

A consortium to protect excellence
The Consortium for the Protection of Strachítunt Valtaleggio was founded in the early 2000s with a twofold mission: to protect a prized cheese that is often imitated, and to obtain the Protected Designation of Origin (PDO). A goal achieved after a long journey, which allowed Strachítunt to officially enter among the great European dairy Cru.

This cheese is not only a product of excellence: it is a symbol of the area, a cultural and gastronomic heritage of the Orobie Mountains, and an invitation to discover Val Taleggio through its scents, its history and the passion of its people.
