The ancient parish church of Gerosa, now deconsecrated, is dedicated to Mary Most Holy Assumed into Heaven. In the oldest documents it was referred to as Santa Maria in Montanis.
It was the village's first parish church, but as the village developed at lower altitudes it was gradually abandoned, as it was now too decentralized from the center of the village. It is currently deconsecrated, but recently restored and of considerable historical and architectural interest.
As the village expanded, a new church was built in the late 15th century among the houses, dedicated to the Holy Cross, which was more easily accessible to the population.
During the pastoral visitation of Bishop Pietro Lippomano in 1538, the church of Santa Croce appears to be already fully active and preferred by the faithful because of its more convenient location, while Santa Maria in Montanis was by then little frequented.
The church, of Romanesque origin, was later renovated in the Baroque style, assuming the appearance it largely retains today.
