Church of St. Bernard

In the center of the historic street of Piazza Brembana, along the ancient Via Priula, is the church of St. Bernard.
The church, which already existed in the 14th century, was completely rebuilt in the 18th century and stands next to the former monastery of the Franciscan tertiaries. Like the other churches in the Brembana Valley, it belonged to the diocese of Bergamo and, from 1315, came under Visconti rule, reentering the vicariate of Serina. Under Venetian rule in 1428 it entered the Venetian vicariate until 1797. The bell tower was added in the early 1900s by architect Santo Calvi. The church fell under municipal property and was administered by the fabbriceri appointed by the municipality.
The building, located in the center of Piazza Brembana, has a facade tripartite by stone pilasters with Ionic capitals. The interior has a single nave divided into three bays, with a women's gallery on the counter façade and a rectangular presbytery with an apsidal choir. Major works include Carlo Ceresa's painting Madonna and Child in Glory and Saints (ca. 1660), which has been restored several times, and the high altarpiece by Palma il Giovane, along with other works by Andrea Vicentino.
The church is owned by the municipality, and the village's Fabbricieri group maintains it. Every year, on December 8, the statue of Our Lady Immaculate is carried in procession along the streets of the village. This event is still deeply felt by the entire population.
