Birthplace of Palma the Elder

Palma the Elder - Jacopo Nigretti de Lavalle born to a very modest family of herdsmen and shepherds, in Serina, like so many fellow villagers, soon made his way to the capital Venice where he became an established painter. His manner of painting is learned from the Venetian masters of the late 15th century. Depending on the commissioner, Palma changes his way of painting. If the commission comes from the church or some religious body he paints in a more purely Venetian style, using the typical Bellini-style background and giving a prominence to the sacred family, while for private commissions he gives the rise to divinity, intimacy to the divine, with linearity of outlines closer to Lotto. Of his many works few remain in the valley. In Serina it is possible to see his birthplace and works.
