Medieval Bestiaries
Saturday, April 18 and Sunday, April 19, 2026
A course on miniature techniques, starting with the medieval bestiaries, by miniaturist Simone Algisi. After an analysis of the genesis and symbolic meanings of animals in bestiaries, we will make a miniature of an animal inspired by these ancient depictions, using traditional techniques and materials.
Medieval bestiaries, precious illustrated manuscripts, were not simply encyclopedias of animals, but true compendia of religious and moral symbolism.
In the Middle Ages, this was a particular category of books that collected short descriptions of animals (real and
imaginary) accompanied by moralizing explanations and references from the Bible. In it are found everyday animals such as the ox and the donkey, wild animals such as the bear the wolf the lion, and fantastic animals such as dragons, griffins, phoenixes, and many others. The bestiaries became true medieval best sellers.
